It is May when I arrive in Desenzano on the banks of Lake Garda. From the train station I am in a hurry to get to the water. These little boats are the first to greet me.

Rain or no rain? Strange weather, clashing with clouds that threaten but in the end will not break out. Here's the lake. Water with sea-like waves. Sirmione should be somewhere on the horizon. Farther beyond, imagine mountains.

Downtown for a walk. Nothing too majestic, only some signs of antiquity on pavements and walls.

Cutting to one side of the main street, I walk uphill and shortly after arrive at the castle, which was built in the Middle Ages as a defense against barbarian invasions. It contained 120 houses. Along the way, a wall remembers Gino Benedetti, a local poet.

The landscape that inspires contemplation could itself turn into watercolor or museum painting. But there is no shortage of museums either: a few ornate little houses, or better yet, the mosaics of some ancient floors discovered by chance. There used to be a Roman noble dwelling here too...

Finally… Sirmione is there! Another castle, another magnificent view, another story 😍
